Introduction

This manual explains using the default setting. (For Windows 8, operations from the Start screen are explained.)

Illustrations and Terminology in this Reference Manual

“Windows® 8 Pro 64-bit” as “Windows” or “Windows 8”
"Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit Service Pack 1" and "Windows® 7 Professional 32-bit Service Pack 1" as "Windows" or "Windows 7"

Terms and illustrations in these instructions.
  • «Fn» + «F7»:
    This illustration means to press and hold «Fn» key, and then press «F7» key.
  • [Charm] -:
    This illustration means to click (Settings) in the Charm menu that appears when you align the cursor to the top right (or bottom right) corner of the screen.
  • [Charm] --:
    This illustration means to click (Settings) in the Charm menu and then click (Power).
  • Start (Start) - [All Programs] : Click Start (Start), and then click [All Programs].
  • Some illustrations and display examples may look different from the actual product.
In these instructions, the names are referred as follows.
  • The computer screen supporting touching methods (using digitizer pen / stylus / your fingers) is referred to as the "screen".
  • In this manual, the digitizer pen and the stylus are referred to as the "pen (included)".

Sound and Video

  • Sound (e.g. MP3, WMA) and video (e.g. MPG, WMV) recorded in ExpressCards and SD Memory Cards may be interrupted during playback. If this happens, copy them to the hard disk drive and play back.
  • Depending on the processing status on Windows, sound may be interrupted at Windows startup. You can mute the sound at startup.

    1. On the Start screen, click the [Desktop] tile, right-click the desktop screen, and click [Personalize] - [Sounds].

      Right-click the desktop and click [Personalize] - [Sounds].
    2. Remove the check mark from [Play Windows Startup sound], and click [OK].

When high-frequency sound occurs

If high-frequency sound occurs around keyboard while using the computer, check the settings for the USB power saving function.
A standard user needs to enter an administrator password and click [OK].
  • Set [USB selective suspend setting] to [Enabled].

    1. Open the Control Panel, and then click [System and Security] - [Power Options].
      To open the Control Panel, proceed as follows on the Start screen.
      1. Right-click any empty location on the Start screen.
      2. Click [All apps] on the toolbar.
      3. Click [Control Panel] under “Windows System”.

      Click Start (Start) - [Control Panel] - [System and Security] - [Power Options].
    2. Click [Change plan settings] of the current power plan.
    3. In [Change settings for the plan], click [Change advanced power settings].
    4. In [Advanced settings], double-click [USB settings].
    5. Double-click the displayed [USB selective suspend setting].
    6. Change settings of [On battery] and [Plugged in] to [Enabled].
    7. Click [OK] and exit the [Advanced settings] screen.

Windows Update

You can update to the latest patches and service packs for Windows with the following menus.
    1. Click [Charm] - - [Change PC Settings] - [Windows Update].
    2. Click [Check for updates now].

    Click Start (Start) - [All Programs] - [Windows Update].
Do not apply "Driver Updates" even if a message to update a driver appears. If a driver update is required, contact your technical support office.

Regarding Windows 8

Displaying all programs ([All apps])

On the Start screen, proceed as follows.
  1. Right-click any empty location on the Start screen.
    The toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Click [All apps] on the toolbar.

Opening the Control Panel

On the Start screen, proceed as follows.
  1. Right-click any empty location on the Start screen.
    The toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Click [All apps] on the toolbar.
  3. Click [Control Panel] under “Windows System”.
    The screen changes to the desktop screen, and the Control Panel opens.

Notification area

The notification area is available on the desktop screen.
To switch to the desktop screen from the Start screen, click the [Desktop] tile.
